What are those trees called that have cotton fall from them?

I have heard them called Cotton Wood, but is there a specific name for them? We had them in Illinois when I lived there, and also at Zion Nat%26#039;l Park in Utah and every time I see them, I just love them!

Reply:They are called Cottonwood trees. The genus is Populus. They usually grow along creeks or rivers.

Reply:Here in the PNW we have the Black Cottonwood Populus trichocarpa. It has other common names like Balsam poplar.

The plains has the Sargent cottonwood which is Populus deltiodes. This or the variant form may be what you have. The variant is Populus deltiodes var. occidentalis
